The Great Condiment War

Game system: dnd5e

A saucy political crisis threatens to drown the nation of Gastrothia in a tide of competing condiment factions. Players navigate trade negotiations, flavor espionage, and the occasional duel fought with bread loaves.

PREMISE For three hundred years, the Condiment Accord kept peace between Gastrothia's four great flavor houses: the Mustardia Combine, the House of Heinz-Kral (red sauces), the Aoili Brotherhood, and the secretive Sriracha Syndicate. The Accord shattered the day the Grand Relish Vault — a neutral repository of recipe scrolls considered sacred by all factions — was found ransacked. Each faction blames the others. Trade embargoes are in place, and border crossings between the Vinegar Marches and the Salt Flats have turned violent. The players are freelance Flavor Diplomats hired by the Gastrothian Senate to find the Vault's thief and restore the Accord before the nation dissolves into open condiment warfare. LOCATIONS - The Grand Relish Vault (ransacked): A marble-and-ceramic hall beneath the capital Sauceton, its shelves now bare. Cipher-locks still intact suggest an inside job. Hidden in the sub-basement: a single overlooked scroll that names a fifth faction no one admits exists — the Bland Heresy. - The Vinegar Marches: Fog-choked borderlands where mustard fields meet red-pepper orchards. Checkpoint skirmishes are daily. A local innkeeper runs a black-market sauce exchange from behind a false pantry wall. - House Heinz-Kral Estate: A towering red brick manor staffed entirely by sous-chefs sworn to culinary secrecy. The matriarch, Viscountess Lydia Heinz-Kral, is charming, merciless, and almost certainly involved. - The Fermented Archives: A vast underground library carved into the limestone beneath the Vinegar Marches, accessible only through a hidden trapdoor behind a brine barrel at the Checkpoint Inn. The Archives predate the Accord and contain flavor scholarship predating any of the four houses. The Bland Heresy uses it as a clandestine meeting hall; rows of empty shelves where confiscated recipe scrolls once stood suggest the organization has been active far longer than anyone suspects. - The Umami Steppes: A wild expanse of scrubland east of the Vinegar Marches where wild-fermentation molds and uncultivated flavor compounds grow without house oversight. The terrain is borderless, making it ungoverned and therefore technically neutral ground. Smugglers, independent flavor scholars, and Bland Heresy couriers all use it as a transit corridor. Somewhere in the Steppes, a naturally occurring fermentation spring produces a compound the Umami Oracle calls the Fifth Flavor — a taste that has no house, no trade value, and no name. KEY NPCS - Viscountess Lydia Heinz-Kral: Head of the red sauce house. Poised, politically savvy, and quietly funding a private condiment army. Motive: control every major trade route by harvest season. - Sergeant Emmer Rye: A mustard-faction border soldier who has grown sick of the conflict and will defect — to whichever side treats him to a proper meal first. - The Umami Oracle: An ancient and possibly sentient fermentation vat located in a cave outside Sauceton. Speaks in riddles, offers accurate prophecy to anyone who brings it a new ingredient it has never tasted. - Pip Vinegar: A child courier for the Sriracha Syndicate who knows far more than children should about cipher routes and vault access codes. - The Blandmaster General: The anonymous leader of the Bland Heresy, known only by title. All available evidence suggests this person is a mid-ranking Gastrothian senator — attendances at Senate sessions correlate suspiciously with gaps in the Heresy's activity logs. The Blandmaster General believes that flavor itself is a tool of class oppression, that the recipes in the Vault are weapons, and that a flavorless society is an equal one. They are not obviously wrong about the politics, which makes them genuinely dangerous. - Chef Baron Dill Fischbach: Nominal head of the Aoili Brotherhood, publicly the most vocal supporter of restoring the Accord. In private, Fischbach has been quietly funneling Brotherhood funds to the Bland Heresy for two years — not out of belief, but as an exit strategy. If the Heresy wins and destroys the Accord, the Brotherhood owes no more tribute to the Senate, and Fischbach retires to his olive grove debt-free. He is friendly, extraordinarily well-fed, and terrified of being found out. FACTIONS - Mustardia Combine: Legalistic, honorable, slow to anger. They did not steal the scrolls but possess information about who did, and will trade that information for trade route concessions. - The Bland Heresy: A shadowy movement that believes all flavor is a form of oppression. They want the scrolls destroyed, not held — and they have plants inside every major house. The Fermented Archives serves as their base of operations; their cell structure means that eliminating one operative rarely reveals another. Notably, the Heresy's ideology has genuine popular support among Gastrothia's underclass, who cannot afford the premium sauces the houses control. - Gastrothian Senate: Nominally neutral but riddled with faction loyalists. At least two senators are on the Sriracha Syndicate payroll. - The Steppeland Independents: An informal confederation of flavor scholars, wandering cooks, and borderless traders who operate out of the Umami Steppes. They hold no political allegiance and have studied the Fifth Flavor compound in secret for decades. They know the Accord was always a power-sharing arrangement dressed up as cultural harmony — and they have documentation to prove it. Their price for cooperation is recognition of the Steppes as neutral sovereign land, something no existing faction will willingly grant. PLOT HOOKS - The Vault's cipher logs show a withdrawal made two nights before the supposed theft — predating the incident by 48 hours. Who had early access? - A Mustardia courier arrives at the players' lodgings carrying a sealed jar labeled "Do Not Open — Contains Evidence" and then immediately dies of completely unrelated indigestion. - Rumor: the stolen recipe scrolls were forgeries. The real Accord recipes have never left Sauceton — they're tattooed on the back of the city's oldest baker, who has been missing for six days. - A freshly printed pamphlet titled "The Flavor Lie: A Manifesto" is being distributed throughout Sauceton's market district. The typeset is distinctive — the same print shop that produces official Senate proclamations. Following the paper trail leads to the Fermented Archives, and ultimately toward the Blandmaster General's identity. - A competing set of recipe scrolls has surfaced on the Steppeland black market — not copies of the stolen Vault contents, but originals the Vault never held. Someone is manufacturing new Accord-grade recipes and flooding the market, deliberately devaluing the stolen scrolls as a diplomatic commodity. If the real scrolls are worthless, the entire premise of the Accord ceases to function. Who benefits from a world where recipes have no sacred value?
