The Drowned Choir
Game system: dnd5e
Something sings between the trenches, and it knows your name. Ancient pressure vents along the Saltveil Trench erupt with bioluminescent spores, luring explorers and scavengers toward the depths.
PREMISE A convergence of sunken horrors gathers beneath Valdris Point, where the Choir calls the living downward. Ancient pressure vents along the Saltveil Trench erupt with bioluminescent spores, drawing the desperate and the curious into the dark. THE SITE: VALDRIS POINT A crumbling sea-elven shrine predates the current age. Its glyphs hint at a covenant made with the pressure-dwellers of the Abyssal Shelf, and at the terrible price that was paid to seal it. The shrine's three antechambers each hold a fragment of the original binding ritual, now partially dissolved by centuries of tidal erosion. The deepest chamber, the Resonance Hall, is where the Choir's voice is loudest and where the leviathan stirs. KEY LOCATION: THE SUNKEN AMPHITHEATER A vast natural basin at the trench's edge, its walls lined with calcified coral formations that act as acoustic horns. Sound behaves strangely here — whispers carry hundreds of feet, and the Choir's resonance can be felt as a vibration in the chest before it is heard. The amphitheater floods and drains with the tidal cycle, creating shifting hazards for explorers. FACTIONS - The Covenant of Still Waters: A secretive order of divers and marine scholars who believe the leviathan beneath Valdris Point is not a monster but a god in its death-sleep. They seek to complete the old covenant, not break it. They will offer aid cautiously if the party shows restraint toward the creature. - The Salvage League of Valdris Point: Hard-edged wreckers and treasure hunters operating out of a converted lighthouse on the Point's north face. They want the jade tablets and the shrine's relics for resale, and will hire or betray the party depending on what benefits them most. KEY NPCS - Maren Silt (she/her): Spokeswoman for the Covenant of Still Waters. A composed, soft-spoken deep-diver in her fifties, she carries a cracked jade amulet identical to those described in the shrine's glyphs. She knows more than she admits and fears what the Choir is doing to the spore-bloom pattern. - Deckard Hume (he/him): Salvage League foreman. Pragmatic and blunt, not cruel. He has lost two divers to the Choir and is frightened, though he will not say so. He will bargain honestly if approached with something he can use. - The Cantor: The source of the Choir's resonance — a vast, deep-dwelling creature of disputed taxonomy, neither fully awake nor truly asleep. It does not communicate in language but in pressure, vibration, and compulsion. Its intentions are ancient and not hostile in any human sense, but its influence is deadly to those without protection. HOOKS - A cracked jade tablet, recovered from a sealed antechamber, depicts a pre-Sundering ritual to bind a leviathan. Breaking the seal might free a monster, or awaken an ally. - Deep in the Sunken Amphitheater, the Choir can first be heard: a haunting resonance that seems to rise from the trench walls themselves. Those who fail to steel their minds begin to hum along, unbidden. - The bioluminescent spores are not random. Mapped over weeks, their blooms trace a summoning glyph miles across the trench floor. - A Salvage League diver returned from below speaking only in a repeated six-note phrase — the first bar of the Choir's resonance — and has not spoken any other words since.
