Native to the black trenches of the Saltveil Deep, the Tidebound Lurker is a sinuous predator built for ambush. Its mottled hide — grey-black shot through with pale luminescent streaks — dissolves into the saltwater column, making it nearly impossible to spot until it strikes. Sailors in Saltveil ports speak of ships that anchor in calm water only to list and sink without explanation; locals blame Lurkers that coil around keels and drag vessels into the deep. The creature hunts alone, and is territorial enough that finding two in the same trench usually means only one survives. Elders among the fishing clans whisper that the oldest Lurkers grow a second row of teeth and learn to regenerate wounds in the brine — a sign that the deep itself is feeding them.
