A territorial predator of the Emberwild Reaches, the Thornback Drake is identifiable by the ridge of heat-blackened spines along its back that glow orange when threatened. Solitary hunters, they establish lair sites around volcanic vents and mark their territory by scorching ash-brambles into deliberate patterns. Charcoal trackers read these marks to estimate a drake's size and mood before entering its hunting ground.
